Cryotherapy and cryosurgery

Typical indication for this therapie are actinic keratoses and also common warts.
This traetment may also be applied in initiating regression of childhood hemangiomas as well as treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids.

Principle:
During cryotherapy, tissue is frozen via exposure to liquid nitrogen which induced local destruction of the tissue.
Application may be open (spray technique) or contact via a metal stamp that is precooled and then applied to the skin. Duration of application of the cold determines the depth of the freezing zone and thus the cold necrosis.

Advantages: Easy to carry out; only local superficial anaesthesia necessary.

Disadvantages: Blister formation due to artificially induced freezing (destruction of the tissue), risk of scar formation.
